Scope of the Seminar & Objectives

Digital information is becoming essential to almost every aspect of modern life particularly to all people working in higher education including university students, teachers and researchers.  These people require digital information and handling skills to use computers, digital information sources and the Internet for their day-to-day studies, teaching and research. In this context, academic libraries are expected to provide quality services to the users enabling them to get high quality education.  Hence, it is necessary to conduct user studies on regular basis and to get feedback from the users to evaluate the library services and to take decisions to introduce new services or improve the existing services. Librarians are supposed to conduct these studies due to developments in IT & ICTs and ongoing changes in instructional technologies used in colleges and universities in this digital era.  Hence, there is need for conducting a national seminar to discuss the information requirements of users in the digital era, need for and methods of conducting user studies, use of ICTs in delivering  cost-effective services, and overcome the problems faced by various types of Academic Libraries in conducting user studies.

Objectives

•    To provide a forum for discussion among librarians to address the various issues relating to   user studies;
•    To create awareness among librarians about the importance of user studies for getting feedback from users to improve library services;
•    To examine the problems faced while conducting user studies;
•    To prepare necessary standard tools for conducting user studies;  and

•    To create awareness among the librarians on how user studies are helpful in providing quality services to users.

Seminar Theme

Users, collection and staff are the three important components of any library.  The library is intended to provide services to meet the information requirements of the users.  The success of the library is depends upon the extent to which the library meets the requirements of the users. Users are the best judges to measure the performance of the library.

The users at present are using e-resources more than traditional information sources and their usage are going-up year by year. These electronic resources came into existence due to the advancements in the ICTs, Electronic publishing, Internet, WWW and mobile technologies.  The users are now saving a lot of time due to the availability of online databases compared to the old days when computers and many other IT tools were not available. Nowadays, the users can also access online databases remotely without coming to the library physically.

Therefore, academic libraries are forced to acquire, organize, manage and provide electronic information sources and services to their users. By conducting user studies, Librarians can understand the impact of electronic resources on teaching, learning, research and users.  Based on the results of these studies. Library services can be modified to meet the information needs of users.  By gathering information from users, their interactions with library staff,  materials and services and the context in which these materials and services are used, the librarians can take right decisions in improving their libraries.

The university was established in 1954, in the world famous temple town of Tirupati on a sprawling campus of 1000 acres with a panoramic and pleasant hill view. It was established with the effort of the great visionaries late Sri Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, the then Chief Minister of A.P. and late Shri Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, to cater to the educational needs and aspirations of the people of Rayalaseema area. With a great wisdom, the founders of this university have rightly coined the motto “Wisdom lies in proper perspective” for it. The university has grown excellently from strength to strength over the past sixty one years, as premier institute of higher learning under the able and committed leaderships of successive Vice Chancellors. The university has four constituent colleges. The university has 58 departments, wherein 71 different PG courses and several diploma and certificate courses are being run with a total academic faculty strength of 400 and 1500 non-teaching and student strength of 5000 including research scholars.

S.V.University Library

The University Library was started in the year 1955 with a small collection of 6700 books in a portion of the University College main building.  Later, it was shifted to the present building which was inaugurated in July 1964, by the Late Dr. Sarvepalli Radha Krishnan, the then President of India.  He described it as ‘Taj Mahal of the South’. The Library building is known for its aesthetic look, functional utility and excellent design with good lighting and ventilation.

The University Library is centrally located and easily accessible to all the departments on the campus, steadily grown over the years and today it has about 3,70,500 documents.  It is the central facility for four constituent colleges of S.V.University including University College of Engineering and has about 7000 members. The Library fulfills all the information needs of its members including students, research scholars, teaching faculty, and non-teaching staff.

SV University Library is a member of the INFLIBNET Programme of UGC.  In order to provide access to full-text e-journals and databases available under the UGC-INFONET Programme, the Library has established a Digital Library in the year 2005.  The Library is an active participating member in the UGC-SHODHGANGA Project. So far it has digitized about 1000 theses and sent to INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhi Nagar for uploading into SHODHGANGA Website.  The Digital Library contains the database of all digitalized theses.
